Ruth was the greatest Baseball Player of all time. When you consider what guys did over the course of their careers, no one combines Hall of Fame caliber pitching skill, dominant offense, great defense and great postsesason play the way Ruth did. And the guys saved baseball.
For almost 40 years, Ruth held not only the record for most home runs hit in World Series play, but he also held the record for most consecutive scoreless innings pitched in World Series play (Whitey Ford broke the scoreless inning record in 1961, and Mickey Mantle broke his HR record in 1964). The thought that one guy could actually hold BOTH of those records is all you need to know about how good that guy was.
Bonds certainly would have been an all time great even without steroids, but you have to discount a lot of the career numbers that he put up.
Between Mays and Aaron, Aaron was a better hitter, Mays was a better fielder. But they were both incredible five-tool players. I'd probably put Mays slightly ahead of Aaron overall. One has to take into account that Mays lost two seasons to military service, and when players miss seasons, or parts of seasons, to military service, you have to evaluate him as though he had played those two years. If a player is injured, he's injured and you can't give him extra credit for games or seasons missed due to injury. But with military service, that's different.
Had Mays played those two missing seasons, he probably would have broken Ruth's HR record before Aaron did. Were it not for those missing two seasons, Aaron and Mays would be very close in career HR and RBI totals.
