How can voters be serious when the democracy is a farce? The main force in US politics is party power. Parties were opposed by the founders as being anti-democratic. Read George Washington's farewell address where he speaks of the danger of "factions".

So why is it a farce?

Plurality (non-majority} elections have the terrible flaw of letting small unpopular factions win. To forestall this (with out reform) voters align themselves into two parties. But this comes at great cost to their autonomy and democratic authority. And all of that "cost" is political power absorbed by the parties. Their secret discussions and deals are rich manure for further anti democratic actions and make the propensity for law breaking.

Parties are creatures of power, and they can frequently get more by deceiving people into acting against their own interests. This is why so little seems to make sense. Often the talking is just an attack on peoples emotional weaknesses, so no sense was ever even intended.

The reform that would curb this farce would be Instant Run Off Voting. Which naturally both parties oppose. Other voting reforms are also possible like "ordered pairs", but what they all have in common is shutting down the minority victories that open up unearned party power.

The California Governor election you site is a perfect example of the farce of plurality voting. The most popular Governor in 2002 would have been Richard Riordan, but Democrat Davis spent to have him knocked out in the primary. This left the republicans with the far weaker Bill Simon. The final result of the two phase party system was that the strongest candidate was knocked out by a minority of voters. And another minority candidate, Davis, was elected.

His candidacy was so weak that a recall was started almost immediately.

Sadly few people understand the California Governor elections for the truly meaningful example of how poor our electoral system is.
