Which of these Orioles were the greatest? Why?
1. Eddie Murray
2. Cal Ripken
3. Frank Robinson
4. Jim Palmer
1. Eddie Murray. They didn't call him Steady Eddie for nothing. Never had a great season but had a number of very good seasons. He played long enough so that his career numbers are pretty impressive.
2. Cal Ripken. Personally I think he's overrated because of the streak. He was a very good player and deserving of the Hall of Fame but because of the streak, many people think he's better than he actually was. His career batting average was only .276.
3. Frank Robinson. Only played for the Orioles for 6 years. Had one spectacular year in 1966 when he won the triple crown and a couple of other productive seasons but overall, probably put up better numbers with the Reds.
4. Jim Palmer. During his peak from 1969 to 1978 he was one of the best pitchers in the Majors. Went 192-101 with a 2.52 ERA during that stretch with 8 twenty win seasons and 3 Cy Young awards.
I would say Palmer was the greatest but I think Brooks Robinson deserves being mentioned as well.
