What was Gonchar doing on that 4th Montreal goal?
I am very happy to see the Pens lose, but what on Earth was Sergei Gonchar doing on that 4th goal by Montreal? He let the Hab just skate right by him? And Malkin too, what a pitiful performance!
What is it with these heartless Russians? Do they even care at all?
Easy now - don't stereotype all Russians.
I, too, was wondering what Gonchar was doing on that play. When the goal happened, mon amour, who happens to be Russian, asked me the same thing. My theory was that Gonchar was just tired (he was at the end of his shift) and perhaps thought that Moen had lost the puck. I'm not trying to make any excuses for Gonchar, I'm just saying that's the only logical explanation I can think of. That, and perhaps since it was the end of his shift, he was coming back towards the bench and the Pens next defenseman pair was coming on. If that was the case, he didn't want to touch the puck lest he might make the Pens take a "too many men on the ice" penalty, which were numerous in this series (and league-wide in these playoffs!). Besides those theories? I just have no clue. It could have been outright laziness and due to frustration.

Despite the long-winded answer you typed up, you must not know a whole lot about hockey. Crosby is certainly NOT to blame. In hockey, your 1st line is covered by the opposing team's best shutdown defenseman and/or forward line. Crosby was covered very well. You do an injustice to the Habs by discrediting their ability to cover Crosby by instead saying it was just weakness on Crosby's part. Even as a Pens fan, I will admit the Habs played to their system well defensively and covered Crosby well.
Since Crosby was being covered well, that's where Malkin comes into play. In fact, Malkin is not on the 1st line with Crosby simply because it makes it hard for opposing teams to pick which line to cover best. Malkin's line did not produce. The Pens should have gotten scoring from other players besides Crosby.
